Classic films to watch

Dear students,

Here is a link to a free subscription to the BFI film site.
Here you can expand your 'cultural competency' and try out classic and foreign films. We have spoken in the past about the lack of diverse films available in mainstream cinema, now you have the opportunity to expand your awareness.
Remember to keep to age ratings!

This is a link to Curzon home cinema- these films need to be paid for but they have more recent films such as Parasite- which recently swept the board at the Oscars.

You might like to look at this list of classic films to give you some inspiration.https://www.theguardian.com/film/2010/oct/20/drama-arthouse-25
Or look at the classic films available on Netflix

If you are a real film fan then try and get hold of the classic text 'Film Art' by Bordwell and Thompson- this is the classic film studies bible. You could plough your way through their suggestions and read their commentary at the same time.

You could even start a blog and post your observations on the films that you watch? If you do please send me a link- I would love to see what you have been watching.

Some of my personal favourite films are:

Withnail and I
A Room With a View (good for Eng Lit students)
Of Time and the City
Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight- a lovely trilogy of films spanning 20 years in real time
The Matrix (great for Baudrillard)
The Godfather
Apocalypse Now (loosely based on Heart of Darkness)
A bout de souffle (French version of Breathless- really stylish)
Distant Voices Still Lives
Lost In Translation (great soundtrack)
Secrets and Lies (Ken Loach)
Vicky, Christina, Barcelona (any Woody Allen film in fact, Annie Hall, Manhattan, lots to choose from)

You have had a break from your NEA- well done those of you who completed the test on Sitcoms on Seneca- very pleasing results. A few of you are still missing that - please ensure that you get it done asap. The link to the test is on the last email. If you have been keeping up with the NEA work you will by now have completed your research and planning. We now need to have a Microsoft Teams lesson on how to go about the Statement of Aims before you go any further. Please read the attached powerpoint before the lesson which is at 11am on Wednesday 3rd June. Please note that the example Statement of Aims refer to last years briefs- dont let this confuse you! Please let me know in advance asap if you can not make this time.

Please find tasks for Media Studies for the next fortnight. Please aim to have these tasks complete by 3rd May. It is up to you how you wish to organise your time. You could do it all in a couple of days and blitz it or you can spread it out if you prefer to stick to a school day schedule. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Don't forget you have the powerpoint guide to help you with these tasks. I suggest you complete them with the powerpoint open to one side. Task 1 & 2 Generic Research Please complete your second and third textual analyses. These should be examples of a product that has a similar aesthetic (look) to the one that you wish to produce. Look at the examples on the powerpoint guide and re read pages 189-190 of the text book to help you with this. You can annotate by hand and take a photo and upload it as a photo to your powerpoint (as long as it is legible) or you could create a word document and upload that, or if you are feeling parti
