Classic films to watch

Dear students,

Here is a link to a free subscription to the BFI film site.
Here you can expand your 'cultural competency' and try out classic and foreign films. We have spoken in the past about the lack of diverse films available in mainstream cinema, now you have the opportunity to expand your awareness.
Remember to keep to age ratings!

This is a link to Curzon home cinema- these films need to be paid for but they have more recent films such as Parasite- which recently swept the board at the Oscars.

You might like to look at this list of classic films to give you some inspiration.https://www.theguardian.com/film/2010/oct/20/drama-arthouse-25
Or look at the classic films available on Netflix

If you are a real film fan then try and get hold of the classic text 'Film Art' by Bordwell and Thompson- this is the classic film studies bible. You could plough your way through their suggestions and read their commentary at the same time.

You could even start a blog and post your observations on the films that you watch? If you do please send me a link- I would love to see what you have been watching.

Some of my personal favourite films are:

Withnail and I
A Room With a View (good for Eng Lit students)
Of Time and the City
Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight- a lovely trilogy of films spanning 20 years in real time
The Matrix (great for Baudrillard)
The Godfather
Apocalypse Now (loosely based on Heart of Darkness)
A bout de souffle (French version of Breathless- really stylish)
Distant Voices Still Lives
Lost In Translation (great soundtrack)
Secrets and Lies (Ken Loach)
Vicky, Christina, Barcelona (any Woody Allen film in fact, Annie Hall, Manhattan, lots to choose from)

5 lessons and homework from 23rd March - Easter

You should have 5 lessons and 3 homeworks between now and the Easter holiday so you should be looking to spend around 8 hours on the following tasks. Remember you have been emailed two powerpoints to support you in this. 'The coursework guide 21' that gives further detail and provides examples and your coursework template 'NEA 21 student copy'. Remember all tasks that you complete should be added to your powerpoint and emailed to the NEA email- not my email address. Any specific questions or queries email me directly. Do not leave all of these tasks until the last minute. Several of them need my approval and feedback before you can progress so stick to your usual timetable and complete them when you would have been having a lesson. I will be online at that time too so can answer any questions in real time. Lesson 1: Read over the choice of briefs again. Decide which one you think you would like to create. Read pages 187-194 of the text book. Remember you we...

Work for fortnight 4th May due in 18th May

4 things to do this fortnight 1. Summary of codes and conventions. Think about what you identified in your textual analyses, 1,2 and 3. What conventions did you identify and what will you want to use in your product? eg a print magazine has a large masthead. An online magazine uses a consistent colour scheme to create brand identity. Bullet points of what you have found out and which conventions you are going to copy. What brand identity/house style will you adopt? 2. Audience Profile This will look like a fact file on an ideal reader who will have a 'preferred reading' (Stuart Hall) of your product. I have given you the NME one as an example but remember this is professional, I am not expecting yours to be of this standard. You can look at the advertising pages on existing magazines to find their examples of audience or reader profiles, have a look here for instance at the kind of information they find out about their readers. You don't have to be this detailed h...
